Pakistan Champions Withdraw From WCL 2026: What Changed and Why

The short answer. Pakistan Champions are out of WCL 2026. The team pulled out on 6 October after the Pakistan Cricket Board refused to issue No Objection Certificates, the clearance its players need before they can turn out in a tournament abroad. Six fixtures have been scrapped, Season 3 drops from 24 matches to 20, and the India Champions against Pakistan Champions game on 10 October will not be played.

The World Championship of Legends 2026 has lost one of its biggest draws barely three days into the tournament. Pakistan Champions, runners-up in both previous seasons, have withdrawn from Season 3 without playing a single ball.

What actually happened

Every Pakistani cricketer who plays in a tournament outside the country needs a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistan Cricket Board. It is routine paperwork in normal circumstances. This time the board would not sign it.

Pakistan Champions owner Kamil Khan went back to the PCB formally and asked it to think again. Talks carried on for several days while the squad sat out the opening fixtures. The board did not move, and with no cleared players to pick from, the franchise stepped away rather than keep waiting.

The first sign of trouble was public before the announcement was. Pakistan Champions were due to open against Bangladesh Champions on the evening of 3 October. That match was listed as postponed for technical reasons and never took place. Their 5 October fixture against Australia Champions went the same way.

Why the PCB refused

The roots of this sit in last year’s tournament, not this one.

During WCL 2025, India Champions declined to play Pakistan Champions twice. The first was a league fixture, the second was the semi-final, which Pakistan went through on a walkover. What irritated the board most was the league game: India were awarded a point despite not taking the field, while Pakistan were left with a result nobody played for.

So the PCB attached a condition before it would release the players. It wanted an assurance from the organisers that there would be no objection raised if Indian players again chose to sit out matches against Pakistan Champions, and that the competition would not reward a side for refusing to play. The WCL did not accept those terms. Without agreement, the certificates stayed unsigned.

It leaves a veterans competition caught in the same politics that shapes the senior game. India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2013, and meet only at tournaments run by other bodies.

The six matches that are now cancelled

Mon 5 OctAustralia v PakistanCancelled
Tue 6 OctPakistan v West IndiesCancelled
Sat 10 OctIndia v PakistanCancelled

None of the six carries points for anyone. A cancelled fixture is not a no result and not a walkover, so no side gains or loses anything from Pakistan’s absence in the WCL 2026 points table.

How the tournament looks now

The organisers reissued the fixture list rather than simply deleting Pakistan’s games, so quite a lot has moved. If you were working from the schedule published in September, it is worth checking again.

The biggest practical change is the venue. Dubai International Cricket Stadium was down to stage six league matches from 9 to 11 October. Those have all shifted to Sharjah Cricket Stadium, which now hosts every game of Season 3, both semi-finals on 16 October and the final on 18 October.

The league has also been renumbered from 1 to 17, and several fixtures changed date. India Champions against South Africa Champions, for instance, was pencilled in for 6 October and is now the evening game on 10 October, taking the slot the India and Pakistan match would have had. The full WCL 2026 schedule on this site reflects the reissued list.

Who it hurts most

Pakistan Champions had been one of the most watched sides in the competition. They topped the 2025 league stage unbeaten with nine points, lost the final to South Africa Champions, and had lost the 2024 final to India Champions before that. Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez are the kind of names that sell a veterans tournament.

For broadcasters and for the organisers, losing the India and Pakistan fixture matters more than losing one team. It was the single most anticipated match of the season and the reason a lot of neutrals tune in at all.

For the players, it is a season gone. Most are in their forties, and a competition like this is one of the few places they still get a crowd.

Could they come back later in the season?

Not realistically. The withdrawal is formal, the fixture list has already been redrawn around six teams, and the league stage ends on 14 October. For Pakistan Champions to return, the PCB would have to reverse its position and the organisers would have to rebuild a schedule that is already running. Neither side has signalled anything of the sort.

Questions people are asking

Why did Pakistan Champions withdraw from WCL 2026?

Because the Pakistan Cricket Board would not issue No Objection Certificates for the squad. Without that clearance the players are not permitted to appear in the tournament, so the franchise withdrew on 6 October 2026.

What is a No Objection Certificate?

It is written permission from a player’s home board to play cricket in another country. The PCB issues them to Pakistani players for overseas leagues, and can decline to do so.

Is India vs Pakistan still happening at WCL 2026?

No. The fixture was scheduled for Saturday 10 October and has been cancelled. India Champions and Pakistan Champions will not meet in Season 3.

How many matches are left in WCL 2026?

Season 3 now runs to 20 matches: 15 in the league stage, two semi-finals on 16 October and the final on 18 October. All of them are at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Do the cancelled matches affect the points table?

No. They award no points to any team. The six remaining sides each play five league matches, and the top four go through to the semi-finals.

Why has the Dubai leg been dropped?

Removing six fixtures left fewer matches to spread across two grounds. When the schedule was reissued, the remaining games were consolidated at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, so Dubai International Cricket Stadium no longer stages a Season 3 match.
